Random Thought: Social Media Civility

Have you ever found yourself poking fun at a comment or news article on social media just for the sake of it? Perhaps you didn't think too much about it at the time, and figured that the worst that could happen is that the person might block you. But have you considered that such behavior can quickly become an outlet for hate and negativity?

The relative anonymity of social media platforms can lead people to be more brazen in their behavior and say things they might not normally say in person. It's easy to forget that there's a real person on the other end of that comment or message and that your words can have a lasting impact on their feelings and well-being.

Mike Tyson's quote "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it" speaks to the reality that the distance afforded by social media can create a sense of safety in people that leads to more disrespectful and even cruel behavior. Just because there's no physical threat of retaliation doesn't mean that you should feel free to spew hate and negativity online.

We all have a responsibility to be kind and respectful to one another, whether online or in person. The next time you find yourself about to make a snarky comment or post a negative message, consider the impact it might have on the person on the other end. Remember that words have power, and that we should all strive to make social media a more positive and uplifting place for everyone.
