Worst Name Calling

We do know that name calling is one of the rudest thing to say upon having a conversation. May it be a joke or an argument, referring a person to a certain animal, thing or even a person is the worst remark that anybody can give. But the worst that I have heard so far is the term "Bisaya". For those who do not know, bisaya is a group of filipinos residing in the Visayas group of islands (since our country is an archipelago, subdivided to three: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao). There is definitely nothing wrong with these people. They are the same as the people residing in Luzon and Mindanao, the only difference is the dialect and the location. I believe that the primary reason that the term Visaya was used in that very wrong manner is that they have a different way of pronouncing the words of the tagalog dialect. A decade ago, people from that region tried to blend with the people in the National Capital Region by means of fashion. Their effort to belong may seem to be in vain due to some people in Manila felt that they somewhat overdone it. Even some households in Manila has a kasambahay (housemaid) from Visayas. It is not proper. It also creates status quo which is inappropriate because we all live in the same country, having our foot walk the same soil, and being sheltered under thew same sky. It is one of the disadvantages of being on a archipelago type of country. Diversity and division. Imagine, what if the tables are turned. What if Visayas is the National's Capital and people in Manila or other part of the country has less exposure to globalization and modernization? Again the Golden Rule: Don't do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you. No one is above the other. In fact, the Filipino culture and tradition is very much alive in their area than in NCR. They do it because it is their way of life, it is being Filipino. Unlike in Metro Manila, you can see traditional festivities, events and dances for just a mere show, for income. That is not so Filipino. The main point of these article is to stop picking on that name. That name is one of the part of the totality of a great Filipino Nation. The Bisayas represent people who still value our culture and tradition, people who first embrace Christianity, people who are Filipinos. How can Filipinos expect to progress when they're way of thinking is so regressed? Acceptance of who we are and what we have is the first move to attain a greater goal. Bisaya is not another term for unfashionable. Bisaya is another term for you, Filipino.
